Mathletics - help

Hi everyone,
a few students have been having a bit of confusion with mathletics this week.

In chance it is important to remember the denominator (bottom number of a fraction) is always how many possibilities. The numerator (top number of a fraction) is how many you have or the number of what you are finding the chance of.

For example:
1. If I had a jar of jelly beans and there were 5 black, 3 blue, and 2 yellow what is the chance of getting a yellow.
The first step is to add all of the jelly beans together to get the denominator. 5+3+2=10
The second step  is to find how many are yellow = 2
So the answer would be 2 out of 10 or 2/10

Sometimes you are asked the chance of two different outcomes.
2. If I had a jar of jelly beans and there were 5 black, 3 blue and 2 yellow what is the chance of getting a yellow OR a blue.
The first step is add all the jelly beans together = 10
Then adding the blue and yellow together 2+3 = 5
So the answer would be 5 out of 10 or 5/10

For averages you need to add all numbers together and then divide by the amount of numbers you have.

E.g.
1. If you need to find the average of 4 and 8 you need to add them together 4+8=12 then divide by how many numbers you had. I had 4 and 8 so that's two numbers. 12/2 = 6. So the average is 6

2. If you need to find the average of 5, 6 and 7 you add them together 5+6+7=18 then divide by the amount of numbers you had (5, 6, 7 which is 3 numbers) 18/3=6 so 6 is the average.
